Interior Plains
The Interior plains is vast and generally flat. A group of settlers close to the Middle East decided that this would be an appropriate region to travel too, in order to have a fresh start with their lives. However, since they're from a sub tropical environment, living here would be harder than it seemed.
One of the three settlers noticed that as they travelled the elevation seemed to drop as they moved further south. This is because the topography of this region has 3 different elevations that are seperated by steep cliffs. This was formed by erosion over many years. He had also noticed that even though the landscape seemed flat, it wasn't entirely. They had encountered gently rolling hills and valleys as they travelled past the different areas of the Interior plains. So, they could verify that this region is more than just the prairie grasslands. It would be hard to get familiar to thisenvironment, because of the shift between this landscape and theirs but it wouldn't affect them too negatively. They would still be able to live here. |
Another one of the settlers noticed how different the climate was. In this region, there were long, cold winters, and short, hot summers. It had less precipitation than other regions, which would affect the settlers and their way of living because they are used to living in a warm, humid place. They would now have to adapt to living in a flat, dry place. Unlike their own country, the climate in this region isn't affected by the ocean. However, an increase in temperature can easily create a tornado. Winters go on longer than usual in some years, so the settlers, would have to experience the cold temperature before they knew how to adapt to it. Fortunately it begins to get more humid during the spring. |
The last settler noticed the unfamiliar vegetation surrounding the region. Their own vegetation usually consisted of lush, green plants that were very fertile because of the humid temperature. The vegetation they saw here was very different. It was mainly just grasses, and trees because of the prairie land (fir, pine, spruce). Plants are able to grow in wide, open spaces because of the topography of the land, so they aren't crowded. Grass grows very tall in the Great Plains, and can grow up to 2ft high in June! This is something that the settlers would definetely have to adapt to. The vegetation here isn't as lush but it was still fertile, which shoudn't keep them from surviving in this region. |
Over time there might be more elevations that make up this region, because erosion had created 3 main elevations but erosion could create more as well. This wouldn't be too difficult for the settlers unless they were used to living in one elevation and had to move locations.
